Just like my last video comparison of my turbo Miata (Mazdaspeed Miata) at Laguna Seca (other video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31bH2t2X95g), I decide to also compare my 1.6L Miata at Laguna Seca with the virtual version in GT5. Mods are listed as in the beginning of the film and the virtual version of my real car is recreated as closely as possible in the game. Immediately after, I did 15-20 laps with no practice to see if the virtual car matches the real car in terms of personal best lap times (game vs. real life).

The result: the best lap time are even closer than the turbo test I did 2 weeks ago! It's down to the hundredth of a second, or the second decimal place!

Of course, there are some things to be said about the footage:

1. Just like my other comparison test with my turbo Miata (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31bH2t2X95g), I'm faster and slower in the game than in real life. Particularly, turns 5 and 6. Yet again, like the other test, I'm faster in real life in turn 5, but slower in turn 6. That simply comes down to bravery for turn 6; I'm braver in the game because I fear the left-side walls in real-life, so I take it easy though there. Turn 5 is faster in real life because I can feel the brakes and grip easier in real life than the game.

2. Just like my real life car, the virtual one steers similarly to the game.

3. In the game, I don't have a clutch or an H-pattern shifter. Instead, I had only a sequential shifter with no clutch pedal. I need to do this test again in the future with a Logitech G25 or G27 steering wheel and pedal set.

4. The red strips on the apexes at Laguna Seca are not recreated in the game correctly. In the game, you can run over them with little to no consequence. In real life, if you hit them, you are going upset the car greatly through the corner, not to mention also bending a wheel in the process.

5. For the real-life lap, I upshifted to 4th gear then downshifted to 3rd before the entry of turn 10. In the game, I keep it in 3rd. I think the discrepancy is simply a misjudgment of gear selection in real life. I should have ran it to the rev limiter in 3rd.

  • GT5 offers pool table smooth surface vs realism.

It there someone eating in your gt5 video?

  • @SamuliS

In GT5, the ride height drop is actually limited in the game to -25mm from stock, that's much less than my real-life NA, which about 35-40mm from stock. I assume if I was allowed to drop my virtual car's ride height to real life specifications, then I'll probably have steering inputs in the game closely matching my real life footage. Basically, I'm much smoother in the steering input in the game because there seems to be more shock travel in the game.

Quick question: have you been to Laguna Seca, or any other real life race tracks in GT5? Let me know if you have and we can compare notes.

I'll make it clear that I'm not defending GT5; it is definitely not a full-on sim. It's just a game I have a lot of fun playing and was curious on its accuracy. If I wanted complete accuracy and full-on simulator, I'd definitely go for for iRacing, rFactor, LFS, etc.

  • This was a badass idea! lol

  • Its crazy how GT5 is synched with the real life driving... Great video

  • loved the sideways action at the end from the real driver!

  • how about you use a movie-grade camera in "life" and try again?

  • @VagaXt

One question, How is GT5 able to match your real life time so accurately if it wasn't a Sim. granted Iracing and Lfs are better Sims. (Rfactor is a mixed back)

  • @VagaXt

The current wheel you are using is quite rubbish, there is virtually no input from the (Virtual) car with the wheel you are using. If you want to experience the best of Gran Turismo 5 i will recommend you buy the T500RS. Also one problem that GT5 has is the tyres, over at GTplanet it took some work to find the right tyres(with their real life counterparts) that will give you the most realistic feel, once you turn everything off (Including abs and traction) you will experience more.

  • i lol at three parts of the video of the real car .

    0:40

    0:55

looks like he gets annoyed at the other drivers lol

    2:37

He casually adjusts his mirror whilst traveling probably quiet fast.

And i like how it held the slide at the end .Must have been because of the mirror adjustment lol

    Nice :)

  • Nice Video Sonny!

  • Nice video! you should try a fanatec wheel w/ gated shifter/ 3pedals or a logitech g27. the games a bit more fun that way.
