The CIF playoffs opened on Tuesday with wildcard games. With their seasons on the line, four area teams went after wins in order to advance to Thursday's first round games.

The San Luis Obispo High boy's soccer team beat Lennox Academy in penalty kicks to advance to the Division 5 first round. The Tigers dominated the first half and most of the second half. It was scoreless after the first half thanks to some big defensive plays by the Panthers to deflect balls headed to the back of the net. Lennox Academy scored a few minutes in to the second half when Jose Alonso booted it just out of San Luis Obispo goalie Erick Cordova's reach. The Tigers kept battling and finally Miguel Perez bended it around a wall of Lennox defenders and found the back of the net on a free kick with just 12 minutes to play. After two scoreless ten minute overtimes, the game went to penalty kicks. The shootout was comprised of five players from each team taking shots alternating by team. Lennox Academy's first player missed badly opening the door for the Tigers. The first four Tigers converted their shots. Finally, Tigers' keeper Erick Cordova stopped the Panthers' attempt to tie it giving San Luis Obispo the win on penalty kicks. The Tigers will play at Animo Leadership on Thursday.

The Santa Ynez High boy's soccer team also won their wild card round of the Division 3 playoffs. Freshman Alex Uribed scored a hat trick as the Pirates won 4-1. They will travel to Paramount on Thursday.

Two area girl's water polo teams also had wildcard games. Unfortunately, they both lost. Righetti fell 9-5 at Oxnard, while Santa Ynez lost 14-5 to Glendale.

Wednesday, the Lompoc girl's soccer team hosts a wildcard game against Rio Mesa at 3pm. The Paso Robles girls look to punch a ticket in to Thursday's first round with a win at Centennial.
