Arbitrary lists are easier to memorize when they're put into song or rhyme. One possible explanation for this phenomenon is the idea that when word lists are paired with the more meta-linguistic feature of rhyme, different parts of the brain are cooperating in the memorization. Just as in people with synaesthesia, this cooperation makes the task much easier.

  • Indeed. When the song was written, the USSR was still the USSR, so "Russia" covers many of the nations that have arisen since then.
