To Live (Chinese: 活着; pinyin: huó zhe) is a Chinese film directed by Zhang Yimou in 1994, starring Ge You and Gong Li and produced by the Shanghai Film Studio and ERA International. It is based on the novel of the same name by Yu Hua. To Live was screened at the 1994 New York Film Festival before eventually receiving a limited release in the United States on November 18, 1994. The story begins some time in the 1940s. Xu Fugui (Ge You) is a local rich man's son and compulsive gambler, who loses his family property to a man named Long'er. His behaviour also causes his long-suffering wife Jiazhen (Gong Li) to leave him, along with their daughter, Fengxia and their unborn son, Youqing.

  • subversive bride won't sing. get her down!

  • @jessi95605 There was so much propaganda about him and his campaign that people liked him.

  • why did they love Mao so much? were they desperate for change an thought he would be a good leader?

  • @condecon26 hahahahahaha!!!

  • I always loved the scene where the couple is painting Mao's picture.

From earlier before you think the girl and the Reg Guard leader don't get along, and then you hear about him pulling down tiles and it builds up suspense to make you think that the Red Guard are tearing down Fugui's place, but it conveniently plays into the relationship between Fengxia and Erxi with them painting the Chairman's picture.

    Cute :)

  • Ah! A gift one could NOT refuse! haha

  • The love really had he(it) Mao's need?
