Our English Shepherd was recently diagnosed with bone cancer, and the vet advised against surgery, although the mass was still small. Did you receive conflicting advice, or did your vet suggest going ahead with surgery immediately? I should add that our dog is older--at nine she is a white-faced senior citizen, and that influenced the decision. But I'm still wondering if we should try it anyway.. Regardless, bless you and Jerry!

By all means, at least get a second opinion. You will find lots of advice and support in the discussion forums on out TRIPAWDS website. Nine years is nothing. We hear plenty of success stories about senior tripawds. It all depends on the dog's relative health. And if you catch the cancer early, you can buy yourself up to another couple years. That's quite cool. What is the address of your blog? My golden retriever (13 years) just had a front paw amputated two weeks ago. She is doing pretty well though.
