I occasionally play my Beta Fish - Sigmund- classical and contemporary music to see if he reacts differently to different types... So I was playing the Russian Dance from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ...

i dont think they can, however i put the speakers right up against the sides of the bowl so that the sound waves are traveling right through the water, and it actually aplifies the music, so I think he's more reacting to the waves traveling through the water but those might be different with different frequencies.
