Sens. Mary Landrieu and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) held a press conference on Thursday, December 17 to announce their introduction of a bill aimed at addressing the unique needs of children before, during, and after a disaster. This bill is the culmination of months of work, including two hearings held by Sen. Landrieu, Chair of the Disaster Recovery Subcommittee. Sen. Alexander is Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee on Children and Families.

The legislation incorporates recommendations made by a National Commission on Children and Disasters report released in October.

The Senators were joined by Ernie Allen, the Co-Founder, President and CEO of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and member of the National Commission on Children and Disasters, and Dr. Cathy Grace, Director of the Early Childhood Development Policy at The Children's Defense Fund.
