A push, a spank, a kiss, and an infant-as-baton were all part of the transfer zone for relay teams at Soldier Hollow. For thirty-plus years, The Utah Nordic Alliance has organized the TUNA Mountain Challenge each fall. The excitement and energy, built upon the frequent lead changes and fast and tight running among the hot competitors, showed the Junior Comp. members as a force to be watched this winter on the tracks. The demanding course follows the Soldier Hollow Sprint 1.3k loop for the under 14 years and the adults race the 5k Rollercoaster/Olympic trail. The first loop is running and the second and third loops are mountain biking or cyclocross riding. The course starts and finishes on the paved roller-ski trails and then heads off-pavement to the higher trails. Teams and solos, kids with kids, mixed kids and adults, and kids on the adult loops make for nearly unlimited categories of winners. Everyone brings a donation prize and then in the raffle everyone picks someone else's prize -- the great ski closet exchange. All proceeds from the entrance fees were donated to the purchase of sit-skis.
