Astronomers believe that the universe began with a huge explosion called Big Bang, 15,000,000,000 years ago. That is so long that it is difficult to even imagine. Since then the universe is constantly expanding.

Different cultures and religions have described with great beauty and poetry this extraordinary event.

In simple way the universe is made of matter and space. The matter is in the form of planets, moons, stars, asteroids, comets and meteors

All these bodies turn around the universe thanks to the same force that prevents you to float in the air, keeps you standing on the ground or sitting in your chair.

One day, an astronomer named Isaac Newton was studying under a tree when a falling apple hit him just in the head. Newton realized that the apple had been attracted by the Earth in the same way that it attracts the Moon. He named this force, gravity. Fortunately it was an apple and not a coconut, that would have been really gravity. Long, long time ago, the sun was in the middle of a giant cloud, precursor of the Earth and the other planets. The Sun spun around itself faster and faster, gathering all that gas in big balls that finally cooled, because they were so hot before, forming the planets.

Thus was born the Earth, a very long time ago, along with the other planets in the solar system. Every one of them began to circle around the Sun just like other little bodies, knowing today as: satellites. The Earth, for example, has the Moon. As it was a very big cloud, it left something of material after the planets were born and so appears the comets, asteroids and many other moving objects in the solar system.
