I agree with you, we must evolve the art, if we are real artists then we should perfect our art, be better than our ancestor. But Aikikai as it is now is an involution. Not even a regression because that would be aikijitsu. And sadly money ambition is one of the causes.
Yes we are not in samurai era but it's seems to me that you are! And according to your coment about weapon like gun, maybe you had to suggest to buy a bomb its workks better! Hehehehe.....
It is the *luxury* of AIKIDO that the attacker may sometimes be defused but left unharmed. But there isn't any ethical-logical "prime directive" of this kind, this would be complete stupidity and incompatible with BUDO. War involves the truth, naked brutal and violent. Look for the dojo where their warm-up lasts at least 25 minutes and nearly kills you at first!
It's foolish to think "techniques work" or don't work in real situations. There're no techniques for that. They are like templates. You improvise instantly, relying on intuition gained by good practice, and either win or suffer the consequences.
Exciting demo! AIKIDO is BUDO - that means, war; an ingeniously aestheticized way of killing. I've trained at an aikido dojo for 7 years. When you attack an AIKIDOKA in earnest, it feels like attacking empty space. Everything is instantaneous, and you suddenly fold, are hit, or broken completely. That is the great beauty of this art.
they are hurting the attacker when he does not need to be hurt for the technique (joint lock/takedown) to work, so hence, it may be real but NOT aikido.

Let O'Sensei Ueshiba to rest in peace! He was founder but it doesn't mean that his rules are unchangeable for ever!!!
Time has changed and you need to follow that in every aspects of your life. That's means for martial arts too.

The point of aikido is not to harm yourself or your attacker. This is more like ninjitsu.
