A good view of the head-down submission display. One of the three 'cubs' playing in the background rushes over to play with the adult by the entrance and obviously gets a less than pleased response and rolls his head down to show submission. The way they both go still is also a sign of tension between them. They then, to my human eye, both look a bit embarrassed. I assume the grumpy badger is the male of the group but I usually easily recognise him easily so perhaps this is a sub-dominant male who, evidently, is still a peck in the order above this playful cub. I have seen the dominant male at several setts disturbed in this way when he is having a good early evening scratch but never spotted this reaction.

  • Wow, a nicely caught shot! Yound, playful pups or young dogs have a similar behavioral response to older, grumpy dogs, the submission and "frozen" moments. When I worked in the dairy industry, the cows performed better at milking time if you (the stranger in the parlour), kept your eyes cast down, and did not stare eye-to-eye with the cow. Sandy
