After an extraordinarily-long commercial break, we return to begin the second half of "Concentration" #38 (sponsored by Dial). Pat comes in as the new challenger, and we begin the second game of the day.

Also in this half is a very weird Dial contest. Basically, make a two-line jingle by December 15 and, if yours is chosen as the winner, they'll give you your weight in gold at $246.50 (equal to $1,837.33 in 2010) per pound!

(They probably wouldn't have picked mine if I was around back then...unless they *wanted* to pay over $100,000.)

  • The long commercial break may have been due to the fact that the show was live and a new puzzle (along with a new set of prize cards) had to be loaded.

Today, it can all be done quickly on a computer.

  • @altfactor The "extraordinarily-long commercial break" was in fact referring to my uploads -- I uploaded Part 2b on 11/20/09, and Part 3a on 2/10/10. I was pointing out how long it took between uploads, not the show itself.

  • Thanks so much for posting the remainder of this episode, Wario.

That second puzzle was a little tough. It took me awhile to figure out the MIS + SURREY = MISERY bit. It was only after the fact when I realized that "surrey" is another term for a horse-drawn buggy.

One thing that sticks out to me is how Hugh Downs was considerably faster in his delivery in this half of the episode. It was obvious they were running out of time and he needed to speed it up to finish the game.

    Many thanks again.

  • *bows* You're welcome.

  • I wish to echo 40onTheBlue's thanks for posting the remainder of this episode. Wish we could see the full final episode of Concentration instead of the closing segment. I thought the Geiger counter in the Dial commercial was rather creepy - why would anyone want to bathe with soap that had the potential to make you radioactive? :-)

  • @fromthesidelines So that explains that the ''part 2c'' of the episode only contained a black screen and some soft background mumbles.

  • That "average housewife" in the Dial ad looks a lot like Betty Rubble.

  • @spxmet Yeah, Hugh didn't spend to much time talking to the Housewife.

  • Ahhh - Always Classy Hugh Downs! Love it! "Concentration" was always a favorite of mine. I know they tried to bring it back with Alex Trebek in the 90's, but I wish they'd bring it back again. Like "Jeopardy," I cannot get enough "Concerntration"!

  • I too would love to see the full ep of the final (color) ep of Concentration.

  • Station breaks, inbetween NBC's daytime programs during this period, usually lasted about 20 seconds- just time enough for a 10 second "spot advertisement" and "WRCA-TV, Channel 4, New York".

  • Boy, is Hugh fixated on the guy being unmarried?

  • I love the deodorant machine. I wonder where you buy a machine like that and if it ran on batteries? Probably at Woolworth's......
