music of the city — frankfurt am main: a portrayal of frankfurts sounds ||

every city has its own unmistakeable face, its personalities and institutions which shapes its mood and character. this speaks not only for the architecture or the educational art and literature, but also for the music. a citys character is expressed in its music and every city has its own musical visiting card, one only has to find it and give it a sound.
off town musics musicians and producers tom schlüter and valery brusilovsky have made frankfurts musical visiting card audible. under the title music of the city they have laid a unique portrait of sound on cd, a declaration of love for the city that sits on the river main and its music and simultaneously an ideal advertising platform for frankfurts companies and establishments.
how does frankfurt sound? it sounds like the 'alte oper' (the old opera house) and 'albert mangelsdorff', like the 'großes stadtgeläute' (frankfurts largest chimes) and the 'hr-symphony orchestra', like 'jo van nelson' and the 'jazzkeller' (jazz cellar). they all have different musical styles and directions, therefore completely different personalities and institutions, but they all belong to frankfurt and that is why they belong together. this combination results in a whole new entirety.
tom schlüter and valery brusilovsky have carefully chosen eleven musical themes for music of the city. theyve put short original samples together with their discreetly fitting and self-composed music which respectively radiates each samples peculiarities. because this new production has been built around original samples, music of the city isnt just a collection of existing songs but a completely new work which allows composers, musicians and institutions who would never have met on stage to meet.
this is all the more thrilling because frankfurt distinguishes itself through the high standard of its musicians and the places in which they perform and tom schlüter and valery brusilovsky have both had a longstanding and close association with many of them. together with the hr-jazz ensemble, tom schlüter has made numerous studio recordings with albert mangelsdorff. the tom schlüter band has accompanied the singer joan faulkner over a long period of time. both tom schlüter and valery brusilovsky have worked collectively with jo van nelson at the tigerpalast (tiger palace).
for these two musicians and producers who have their own publishing house and label, the jazzkellers stage and the alte oper are intimately known places.
the cd music of the city frankfurt am main constitutes the peak of their combined musical work.
