Jensen VM9022

While I was researching decks on youtube I was always disappointed that people would not cover enough about how teh deck works. So I admit this video is fairly long but I tried to go into every screen and show dvd, radio, usb and ipod functionality for a complete overview of how this unit works.

I ended up sending this back. While the Jensen has a lot of really good features for the money, there were a few hangups I could not get over.

1. No illumination lead for the display, so the screen does not dim at night. Which ends up being a problem because you have to turn the contrast / brightness all the way up to see the screen sometimes in the california sun.

2. usb interface is crap. Seems the more stuff you have loaded on the usb, the longer it takes for it to start up. Also you cannot just get a list of folders to browse from, you can only do FOLDER+ and FOLDER-, so if you want to listen to something in the "M" range, you have to keep clicking + through everything to get to the M's .. which is also crap because it will not move to the next folder until it begins playing the first song in the folder you just navigated to.

3. I'm not going to detail why the nav sucked, just to say that it did. Main beefs were to see the Nav full screen any music you are playing stops. You can use the PIP function but you cannot interact with the Nav, only see it really scaled down.

4. The iPod interface is the real saving grace of this system, if you plan on using an iPod this interface isn't that bad. It could be faster, but its actually pretty good and does some things a lot of units I have used don't. You can scroll through artists, playlists, what you are currently playing / shuffling, page by page or by clicking the scrollbar.

5. I got complaints about the mic on the bluetooth interface, even though I left a voicemail for myself at my office and I didn't think it sounded that bad. I didn't use it too much because it didn't really connect right with my iphone, and the address book would dial someone different than I was clicking on in the phonebook, like it was off an index or two. However I'm sure that's just some iphone incompatibility.

I don't remember. Maybe I started the shuffle on the iPod..

Besides my long commentary on this video, the main reasons were: couldn't see the screen very well in teh daytime, at night the screen was too bright (no illumination lead), and the interface is slow and cumbersome. Jensen is on the right track, its just poor execution.

I had the vm9021 before this model... it got stolen during shipment to Germany. Basically you trade the tv tuner for usb support... fair trade to me. The only thing missing with the 9021 was usb. It's really the absolute best dvd\touch screen receiver for the money. I mean for under

Press "Language"

Press the Tools icon (hammer/screwdriver)

Press "Brake Override" then press "On".
