Max Neuhaus (American composer who just passed away earlier this year) installed a "sound sculpture" - a "pillar of sound" - underneath a subway grate in the *middle* of Times Square 30 years ago. It holds the record for being the Most Listened To piece of contemporary music in history, though most passersby don't even recognize that they're walking over/through it.
I think it's cool, and even more amazing that in the post-9/11 New York they allow it to remain.

Anyone who visits Times Square should stop and check it out.
