5 Facts About the Holy Month of Ramadan
The Muslim holy month begins tomorrow
Nearly 1.6 billion people around the world will observe Ramadan in August — that's one-fifth of all the people on the planet.
What is Ramadan? It is a month where Muslims fast in an effort to become more patient and spiritual with Allah. Muslims also offer a greater number of prayers than is typical during the rest of the calendar year.
When does Ramadan take place? This year it runs from August 1 through August 29. In 2012, the holy month will last from July 20 through August 18. The holy month is based on the lunar cycle and there is generally some debate amongst Muslims as to the official start of Ramadan.
What is Eid-ul Fitr? This is the celebration that comes at the end of Ramadan. It begins with the new moon is seen, around the 29th or 30th day of the fast. There is feasting and celebration with family and donations of food to the poor are a key part as charity has a central place in the observance of Ramadan.
How do Muslims observe the fast? Many Muslims will eat a small meal before sunrise and another small meal after sunset with nothing, no water even, consumed during the daytime hours.
What Other Ways do Muslims Observe Ramadan? Most try to get to mosque as often as possible daily, generally making more visits than they do during the rest of the year. Many also make an effort to read the Quran in its entirety.
