Taking cue from the contributions of the elders who had participated
in our discussions and interviews we have come up with an ambient
lighting system Pervasive Beacon Strip, which illuminates the
pathway of an elderly user when he/she gets up from the bed during
night.

The illuminated pathway runs from the bed of the user to the bathroom
door thereby helping the elder to navigate his/her way to and from the
bathroom. When the elder returns from the bathroom and gets back into
the bed, the system recognizes this event and turns OFF the Pervasive
Beacon Strip.

The Pervasive Beacon Strip is a prototype developed at the Ethical
Technology in the Homes of Seniors (ETHOS) laboratory at Indiana
University Bloomington. For more information, please visit our website
