It rained cats and dogs on March 27th 2008 exactly 105 mm . Call it climate change, unusual rains or whatever but its benefits are for those waiting to capture it. By ensuring that these unusual showers are harvested and by being smart with rainwater one can supplement one's water requirements, prevent local flooding and recharge underground aquifers. A good design helps and there is nothing like stepping out in the rain to see how systems work. Not good for the camera though, thank god its a Sony.
For those statisticlly inclined parts of Bangalore get 970 mm of rain in year on an average. This translates to 97,000 litres on a 100 square metre roof. If you have a 6000 litre sump tank you cn harvest anywhere between 70,000 litres to 80,000 litres. The additional water which overflows from the sump can be put in a recharge well. This will augment ground water reserves.
The city receives 3000 million litres per day equivalent of rainfall. If we have a million sump tanks and recharge wells ALL the rainwater can be harvested. Bangalore will not have ANY water shortage. The GOAL is clear, what are you going to do about it? :):)
