Changing gear speeds with the motor running is a machine shop taboo, it like changing gears in your car without pressing the clutch there by diminishing the machines lifespan. It doesn't take too long to rotate the chuck by hand.

to be fair that guard aint gonna save you from shit so why is it even there?

I bought this lathe about 3 years ago. I had no idea the threading/auto feed knobs could be changed while the machine is running. That will make using it a bit easier.
The feature I use the most on the machine, that is not included in other similar lathes on the market, is the pumped coolant.
At any rate it has been a good machine, and I think the best value on the market right now.
