THE BOOK OF ELI MOVIE REVIEW, by Anthony J. Gomez - The Movie Messenger

Rated: R
Genre: Dramas
Release:Jan 15, 2010

Synopsis: In the not-too-distant future, some 30 years after the final war, a solitary man walks across the wasteland that was once America. Empty cities, broken highways, seared earth--all around him, the marks of catastrophic destruction. There is no civilization here, no law. The roads belong to gangs that would murder a man for his shoes, an ounce of water...or for nothing at all.

But they're no match for this traveler.

A warrior not by choice but necessity, Eli (Denzel Washington) seeks only peace but, if challenged, will cut his attackers down before they realize their fatal mistake. It's not his life he guards so fiercely but his hope for the future; a hope he has carried and protected for 30 years and is determined to realize. Driven by this commitment and guided by his belief in something greater than himself, Eli does what he must to survive--and continue.

Only one other man in this ruined world understands the power Eli holds, and is determined to make it his own: Carnegie (Gary Oldman), the self-appointed despot of a makeshift town of thieves and gunmen. Meanwhile, Carnegie's adopted daughter Solara (Mila Kunis) is fascinated by Eli for another reason: the glimpse he offers of what may exist beyond her stepfather's domain.

But neither will find it easy to deter him. Nothing--and no one--can stand in his way. Eli must keep moving to fulfill his destiny and bring help to a ravaged humanity. --© Warner Bros

  • I love when people make "review" videos and assume they speak for the masses as if they are Roger Ebert. This "review" is an opinion and an opinion not shared by most. It would have done well to search this movie on Yahoo Movies where he would have found a B+ rating by users and a B- review by critics. Apparently many more like it than didn't. As has been stated by others the movie is about the book...NOT Eli...and the ending is completely consistent with the book its about. Pointless review

  • @COArsenal So what you're telling us is that the book is the protagonist? If I'm understanding you correctly, the BOOK is the PROTAGONIST.

Would anyone like to tell COArsenal why the book cannot be the protagonist?

  • dude... you haven't seen a samurai or western?? those characters are supposed to be unknown for the most part... it makes them interesting in that genre... Eli is more like a force of nature.

And ppl only find the ending ridiculous if they automatically hate religion... it's not preach... you could change the bible to koran and change the quotes and it would still be the same movie... it's more about spiritually than any one religion... but ppl tend to be too close minded over this kinda thing

  • I know what the movie was saying, but making that book so important is just as bad as making the all spark all important. They're only used to push the plot forward because without it, the character would only stand still.

  • Some characters don't need it... that's how westerns and Samurai films functioned... it's part of the genre dude... and it's clear they were working to that

  • I understand that, but this is neither a western nor a Samurai film.

  • its a good film

  • I kinda liked the ending. It wasn't expected at all. I will agree that Eli is a underdeveloped character. They could have added flashes of his past that led to him getting the book or maybe he could have had some companions that complemented him more than Solara

  • @Icanhazplaythrough Thats true, but what that scene is telling you is that he is blind.

  • This review sucks and the guy talking should be slapped.

  • It blew my fucking mind to find out he is blind.

  • Ive watched loads of your reviews and their all blunt around most aspects with the film...

  • seriously is de any good reviews deez days?

  • Not many people know the countless number of ways this movie can be viewed, as the movie was intented to be. This movie is not in an way "Bible Bashing", as even said by the producers themselves. It can be taken in the way of a Christian, or viewed as some people as a control mechanism. Both are two ways this movie can be perceived, out of the many ways it can be.
