i did a similar problem, but only using handwritten digits from US census. got an accuracy of 96%.
just wonder in your case, did you use the pixels and features thereof as inputs, or did you make also use of the sequence of strokes?
i havent used the second, but in your case i think you should consider using it, since you have access to it directly through the application.

Hie.. I have a great interest in neural networks. So, can u plz tell me how u set weights and learning laws u implement. It will be much better if u can provide me code of this.
