Nearly 200 volunteers came together to celebrate Earth Day to preserve a significant area of natural habitat at the High Plains Environmental Center. The center is a 275-acre area of open space, ponds, and grasslands near a large housing development, just East of Loveland, Colorado. The center is considered a "suburbitat" because of its unique mix of suburban built and natural habitats. Much of the area's natural habitat is maintained for the exclusive use of wildlife and migratory birds. Volunteers planted 1,000 plants, shrubs, and trees to help protect wildlife areas from zones of human activity. The plants will provide food, forage, and cover for the wildlife and birds that live in this area.
