Nahh.. you don't need to try it off something first. Just jump higher!! If you jump high enough, even a lousy tuck will get you around. Just watch my first (lousy) backflip outside where I did everything wrong and still landed on my knees at worst.

you gotta jump higher, jump as high as you possible can, and then tuck as hard as you possibly can, it only gets easier and easier

yeah thats my point, if you jump up alot higher than that and tuck harder you wont land on your head, it helps if you get someone to spot you the first couple of times, like have them place their hand on your back and help you flip around
