Just more proof that howtheworldworks often misses the forest for the trees.

  • Industrial nation? More like what every nation was at the time: Imperialist. B/c we didn't have to sail across oceans to find land that wasn't already "settled" (used loosely), we came up with Manifest Destiny.

Do you remember what President was responsible for most of the Indian killing? That's right, the architect and shaper of the modern democratic party. He loved slavery and promoted Indian removal. Should I now think all on the left are awful; the way you think about the right?

  • "History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake" - James Joyce. Why do you feel it necessary to defend history? Imperialism was part and parcel of capitalism of the day. That imperialism lives on in the pursuit of oil.

  • Wow, you were able to find a quote that says history is awful. History is history and you cannot judge history by the standards of today, but rather try and steer the future by them.

Imperialism and capitalism can be mutually exclusive. China isn't taking over the US by selling more cars than it now.

  • China is getting funded by unethical investors who know China can always have the cheapest labor.

  • What's the 'we' crap? My ancestors were being slaughtered across Europe when the American Indians were being attacked.

  • I was speaking from a US historical perspective.

  • Moral ambiguity. Intentional or not, Avatar is a good metaphor for the failures of government and why anti-statism is the only philosophical answer. I liked the movie.

  • Calling "Avatar" a metaphor for native americans is like saying that the "Aliens" movies are a metaphor that we should shoot breeders because overpopulation will kill us.

So the "story" you spoke of is one written in body language, because the dialog was barely present. Because that move was in essence just a visual work of art, and it ceases to impress after that.

  • Fern Gully + Dances With Wolves X Interstellar Travel = Avatar

  • @agent4844 Are we really buying it or are we stealing it. Also why did we invade Iraq if we could have bought the oil.

  • @dukee155 I'll translate that for you, we are buying their oil so they can survive there. If we weren't buying their oil their economy would be tanked.

  • They were very much like Native Americans?

Did they also cannibalize each other & have massive slavery & mass sacrifices?

  • We are stealing from Iraq too.

  • @j0hnwi11iams If those investors were not there to create the factories China will have the cheapest prostitutes.

  • @j0hnwi11iams Even then, are you aware Native Americans butchered women and children on the frontier? It wasn't merely colonial propaganda. Many native tribes had no qualms about killing women and children, it wasn't considered immoral like it was in many other cultures.

  • But, if John Cameron were honest, and wanted to draw realistic parellels between the Navi and Native Americans, he would've also portrayed them as engaging in widespread human sacrifices, ritual torture, pedestry, slavery and bloody, devastating warfare between tribes.

What I got from the movie is that James Cameron wants us to worship more trees, and kill more Marines.
