UP steamer 844, with Southern Pacific heritage unit 1996 and Western Pacific heritage unit 1983 as helpers, departs Truckee, CA on their way over the ex Southern Pacific Donner Pass line. The train had stopped in Truckee to allow a heavy grain train ahead of it out of Sparks to get through the two mile Tunnel 41, known as the Big Hole. The special will stop just east of the Big Hole in order to allow the locomotives to cool before heading through the long bore.

  • Dang! That is one epic lashup with 844, 1983, AND 1996! Great shot and catch!

  • Nice video! Boy, you just about got steamed there at 1:35! Must have been Steve or Ed running because I saw Lynn peaking out of the Golden State Limited there. Nice job!

  • I also chased 844 on this day when you shot this vid. I shot it at Glenshire about a mile east of this spot you were at. I ended up getting vids of 844 at 12 different locations across across Nevada and California. Vids are on my youtube account.
