I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY HOLLYWOOD DID NOT GRAB HIM WHIST HE WAS SAFE IN AMERICA, PERHAPS IT WAS DUE TO HIS SHORT HEIGHT, ALTHOUGH HOLYWOOD WAS USED TO FILMING ACTORS STOOD ON BOXES OR SOE OTHER CONTRAPTION, A GOLDEN CHANCE WAS MISSED AND A GOLDEN VOICE WAS SILENCED AFTER ONLY FIVE YEARS FROM THIS FIRST USA CONCERT THAT SCHMIDT GAVE...

Great singing with a fine interpolated trill that is more conservative on his studio recording but this is live and amazing in the 2,800 seat (not amplified Carnegie Hall) The Carnegie Hall Concerts put to rest any talk of his voice being a microphone voice only. In a lyric role he could sing in any opera house in the world and he did sing in Boheme complete in Europe. He died in 1942 at age 38, not even in his prime. Here he was only 33 and with his fine technique his voice would have grown

FANTASTIC! WHAT STYLE! WHAT ELEGANCE! WHAT RESPECT FOR THE MUSIC! No hamming it up or playing to the footlights. Just Joseph Scmidt and Donizetti. This is artistry of the highest degree!
