This is a recording of LACMTA bus #5035 on the 30 line to Pico-Rimpau Transit Center. In this recording, you'll notice the belts screeching when the bus takes off only. Photo is of LACMTA #5083, taken by Eddie Anthony.

I do have a recording of LACMTA #5311 (a 2001 New Flyer C40LF, about 27-28 minutes, recorded on Line 446) in which the belts screech through just about each gear, even as the bus slows down.

EDIT: Link no longer available, as the SaveFile site is now defunct.

Enjoy!!

  • this Bus Sounds like Nabi or New Flyers & Why it Head the Screech Noise From Neoplans

  • As for your question, read the comments by Theangrytruckdriver.

Secondly, this is a C40HF. Read the comments between me and Javonds at the top.

  • If this is a neoplan then why is there a picture of a C40?

  • Because of this (and I quote you):

"These Neoplans in LACMTA are the only busses I've ever ridden with belt squealing, and I've been on a lot of busses!"

What I was trying to show with this recording of the New Flyer is that the Neoplans aren't the only ones with the belts going screech in the LACMTA fleet.

  • I would like that sound recording of 5311.

  • I knew it cuz when i visited LA and took a couple of buses I heard that noise. I had a good feeling it was a belt because i worked on cars a sometimes the belt sounds like that but its not a good thing.Never knew about the fan clutch engage.

  • nice recording, thats the new MTA automated system, STOP REQUESTED PLEASE USE REAR EXIT, cool video

  • not a neoplan this is a C40HF

  • Yeah I finally heard the New Flyers doing the same belt squealing thing recently, and it seems a lot of the Neoplans don't squeal anymore, I found out they are doing scheduled maintenance on some of the Neoplans.

  • Oops sorry.Nice recording

  • The reason the belts make a lot of noise is because the fan clutch engaged. The Reason I know this is because i used to to be a mechanic for the LACMTA Div 5, 7, And 10
