Dave Neale playing the Wurlitzer in the Gaumont State.

Dave has worked as (amongst other things) security guard, architectural guardian, stage hand etc at the Gaumont State, Kilburn, since 1959. He was there when The Who played, and The Beatles. He operated the Wurlitzer when it was a cinema, he looked after the building when it was a bingo hall, and now works with the current owners to help restore and preserve the original art deco interior.

This tune was the first tune ever played on the Wurlitzer when the cinema first opened in 1937. The current owners (a church - the congregation of which you can see in the audience) kindly opened the building to the public as part of the 2011 Kilburn Festival.

  • Wonderful to hear the organ again. Thanks, Dave, for keeping it going.

  • Thank goodness for Dave staying on. He used to hold forth at the Regal Edmonton as well, and kept that place in good repair.

  • Would be fab if regular concerts could be held on the Wurlitzer again!
