Connecticut elementary school shooter dead; terrified children evacuated from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
A masked shooter is dead and several people are wounded — including some school children — after gunfire erupted Friday within a Connecticut elementary school.

Lines of children gripping shoulders were led by their teachers from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown shortly after the 9:40 a.m. shooting in the main office.

There are unconfirmed reports that the shooter was targeting the school's principal. Her name is Dawn Hochsprung, according to the school's website.

Multiple people were hurt, and children were among the wounded, the Hartford Courant reported.

At least three people were treated at Danbury Hospital, including a teacher who was shot in the foot, police sources said. A witness spotted two wounded children — one had a bloody face, the other with a hand injury, WTNH reported.

Two guns were found near the shooter, who died at the scene, according to law enforcement officials Witnesses said the shooter was wearing a mask but his or her identity was still unknown.

A "platoon" of state troopers were combing the scene, said Lt. Paul Vance. of the state police. The FBI is also assisting.

Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn. is in Fairfield County in the southwest corner of the state.
The entire school district has been placed on lockdown "to ensure the safety of all students and staff," Newton Public School District said is a statement.

Terrified children described hearing the gunshots and being saved by their teachers.

"I was in the gym and heard several loud booms...we all just huddled... and our teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us. Then a police officer came in and told us to run outside," one little girl told WVIT.

A triage area has been set up outside the school and ambulances and stretchers set up, waiting for potential victims.

Newton, in Fairfield County, is a close-knit town where "everyone knows each other," one witness said.

Gov. Dannel Malloy's office said via Twitter: "State Police are coordinating w/ federal & local authorities in Newtown. Will provide add'l updates as they become available."

State police are responding to a report of a shooting at a school at Sandy Hook Elementary at 12 Dickenson Drive in Newtown.

State police have entered the school and evacuations are underway.

The entire district is in lockdown and a reverse 911 call went out to parents.

The fire department and the first selectman are enroute.

Students are being escorted from the building in groups. A staging area has been set up for students and their parents near the school.

The school superintendent's office says the district has locked down schools as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of students and staff. The superintendent's secretary, Kathy June, says reports of a shooting are not confirmed.
State police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance says they have a number of personnel on the scene to assist.
A statement on the district's website stated that afternoon kindergarten classes have been canceled.
