  • British High Command made this Error more than once. They prepare a big Plan, then they hear Romours of a big Problem, they send out Recon to check if the Problem is true, and if the Recons aproove that the Problem is true its just getting ignored.

Same happened in WW2 with the Bridge of Arnheim. The Dutch Resistance told the British that masses of Panzers are in Town (11 and 12 SS Panzer was making Refreshness Holiday there),.The Air Recon Photograph showed the Tanks too but the Plan was not stopped

  • the casualty numbers make the Irish rebellion 3 years later seem like a minor skirmish

  • hell, I could have lead better than Hague

  • @cavaleer the french nearly did the same with their offensives.

  • FUS RO DAH!!!!!

  • @phstke maybe to the untrained eye....

  • -_- nice

  • I am sorry but the point about all the troops being ordered to walk is nonsense. . Of the 80 battalions that attacked, over 50 were already in no-mans land at zero hour in advanced positions. 12 rushed and 5 did walk. We don't know about the others. Rawlinson laid down NO orders for how the troops were to attack in his Tactical Notes, he let the divisional/brigade commanders decide this.

The walking or not was irrelevant, since the machine guns had not been knocked out nor the guns.

  • @ToaJoe You are basically right, but don't expect people on youtube (in the main) to understand that. Most but not all people on you tube are ill-educated, don't have the attention span to read a paperback let alone a history book (or several to take in different views).

As for your point, Rawlinson advocated bite and hold, each line at a time, Haig advocated a wide artillery bombardment, dilluting its effect to 10 miles back, which massively damaged the effect of the bombardment.

  • How pathetic were the Brit generals. Just pathetic. Throwing their countrymen to death with totally confident ignorance.
