She was wonderful indeed!! Check out the aria of Calbo from Maometto II that coloratura fan posted recently. Absolutely fabulous, she just brings me to tears.
Really too bad as more of these productions would be wonderful to have on film. Valentini-Terrani was someone I had not heard other than a selection or two, and from the little I have seen posted hers was a superb voice in the kinds of roles I associate with Marilyn Horne.
It was the time of the great Rossini Renaissance (the Rossini Opera Festival gave a massive contribution). There were singers (including tenors!!) who could cope with Rossini's florid passages. Rockwell Blake, Devia, Serra, Cuberli, Merritt, Valentini Terrani, Dupuy, Pertusi, Ramey showed us how this music should be sung. Sadly most of the times recording companies ignored these fabulous productions, more interested in money and shallow routine.
Were a number of the Donizetti and Rossini lesser known works produced specifically with Serra and Devia as the anchors of the performances in the 1980's-90's?
