Yes, Australia (by and large) was a penal colony. They certainly did use a lot of Aboriginal people effectively as slaves - although nowhere near what was done to the African people.
Planking is a ridiculous fad which has no connection to slavery.
Incidentally, 'Picnic' has no connection at all to slavery or hangings or lynchings. It's a French term "piquenique' probably borrowed from German. Originally it meant a meal where everyone brought something, but we've adopted it to the modern.
