It is the responsibility of the President to protect the United States from enemies both foreign and domestic. Bush successfully did that here and you can see that the more strident interrogations happen on his authority, and they're rare. ALL OF THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE.
Nobody likes to see anyone suffer, but one has to consider the suffering of near future victims, and numbers of suffering should factor in.
Bush was the compassionate one in this particular situation.

God bless Bush? God bless Jesus. He loved torture too. In fact, when Jesus felt he had to protect his followers, he asked for some legal advice and when these legal advisers deemed the proposed torture techniques legal, he went ahead and ordered the application of said techniques. To protect his followers from more attacks. It's in the Bible.
