The picture that represents your channel is your image and your image is what brands you in the YouTube community. Making a good YouTube channel picture has been adressed in a previous blog already, "How To Make A Profile Picture For Your Channel: Partnership Program Part 13

Your background needs to look proffessional so invest in that also. Make a deal with someone on YouTube who knows how to photoshop, return the favor for them by boxing them, shouting them out in a video, or working upon an agreement of which you choose. If you already know how to photoshop, do the best you can on your channel baground. If you like someone elses's background, use theirs and modify it in the fashion that you like. Rjared stresses the importance of your channel background in the same category as you channel profile picture as these things are part of your brand which helps you gain subscribers and viewers.
