Brazil is the leading economic power in South America, yet it still has serious crime as well as a large disparity between rich and poor. Many poor Brazilians live in shanty towns -- called favelas -- that surround the cities. Favelas - characterized by poorly constructed buildings and inadequate infrastructure - are often the center of criminal activity. These shanty neighborhoods date from the 1920s, but their populations are still growing. Brazilian authorities have made tackling crime and poverty in the favelas a priority. Steve Mort has the story from Sao Paulo.

  • its funny how some ignorants think they can know a country just watching some videos on youtube.

foreigners only show bad things about non first world countries to feel better.

we are racist?? well, at least we dont need to make wars and kill people in others countries to get richer...

USAamericans thik their blood is better than people in poorer places.

  • People should understand the concept of Favela...

It started when people moved to the big cities and claimed the right to live on other peoples land for free, without paying rent, light or power.

Before you sympathize with these people ask yourself if you would tolerate them on your doorstep.

  • all those politicans is just blablabla and corruption

  • @StopSexualtourisPerv what do you know about the usa? not ALL of us are bad sheesh

  • The US should have a closer look inside their country, take Flint in Michigan for example, more than 50% of the people there are unemployed, very high murder rate, very high drug related crimes, and the houses there are not so different from many of Brasil favelas...US smell your ass before you say other country stink.

  • Just have a quick look at Colombia, murder rate there is 40 people per weekend, just in Bogota, in Brasil one of the most dangerous cities Belo Horizonte it is 8 murders per weekend, study the facts before giving opinion on other countries...

  • @rapozaofl Yes, I know, I've lived in the US for a couple of years. Funny thing is that people from their countrys only want to show whats the worst from other ppls countrys.

  • @bryansouza you should see the midwest, its a third world country there

  • I have a solution... How about less taxes for the poor and middle classes, lower interest rates, less bureaucracy when hiring or opening a business? In Brazil the richer you are less taxes you pay, that has been the problem since the 60s...
