Female samba drum band SheBoom played at the beginning of the very large EIS rally which took place after a huge demonstration in Glasgow attended by people from all over Scotland, EIS members, other trade unionists, teachers, lecturers, parents, children and activists. They were well received by the audience and the rally got off to a good start. One SheBoom member danced around with a placard with the name of a primary school under attack by the government cuts. The march and rally launched a new campaign by the Educational Institute of Scotland to fight back against cuts to funding in education which is seriously being threatened by the government. Much damage has already occurred in the form of many school closures over the last year, and instead of reducing class sizes which would help kids learn, classes from closed schools are joining with classes in new schools to form larger classes at the expense of our children's schooling. Teachers' jobs are being slashed. Free school meals which was initially a proposal of the Scottish Socialist Party, and voted down by most other MSPs looked as though they were finally being considered by the SNP but now it appears there is neither funding for free school meals nor for reducing class sizes while the Westminster government prioritises spending billions on wars and bailing out bankers. Educators are now up in arms about the cuts in the teaching service, not only about their jobs but the damage that will be caused to kids which will disadvantage a whole generation. The EIS has also protested against education cuts at the STUC demo in Edinburgh on Oct 23rd and more recently in Renfrew on Feb 19th 2011 and there is another big march against education cuts coming up soon this year.
