A sharp step up side kick stops this anticipater-fighter in his tracks...literally. Although the foot actually hits the upper chest (okay maybe chin) this technique was deemed illegal (WKF rules).

This was a mens team event where the match ups are random, hence the size difference. Both men were black belts or higher.

  • nice fake out :)

  • @catkong7 I think many of them were probably done for entertainment purposes or just "showing off". Some of the flashy tkd kicks work every once in a while in tkd competition but hardly ever in kickboxing and pretty much never in MMA. Whatever the blocks were created for, most of them are a waste of time to practice today. If you watch the Martial arts episode of Penn and Teller´s "Bullshit" you´ll see so many BS moves in the karate they show there that it´s sad. Both strikes and blocks.

  • @rokkvi1 the problem with the blocks is is many cases they werent blocks lol the high rising block for example was supposed to be a fore arm strike when fighting in close but many dont practice it that way any more, further punching from the waist was only suppose to be done in kata .

i do agree that some of the more colorful kicks of tkd arent very realistic for any type of fighting but it seems they were used for more for entertainment purposes than combat

  • @catkong7 well a lot of techniques from traditional karate styles and tkd are pretty useless in MMA or real fights and not found in kickboxing although they may be found between different TMAs. Most of the blocks for example. Punching from the hip is also not good in real fights. A lot of the backfists in karate/tkd are not properly done and very different from the backfists you see in MMA/K-1. Many of the kicks in TKD are almost impssible to pull off in MMA as well.

  • @catkong7 I apologize for overlooking kyokushin karate, which is indeed full contact and very effective, although it suffers from the incompleteness of not allowing head punches in competition. I was talking about traditional karate styles and should have mentioned that kyokushin is an exception.

  • @rokkvi1 uh no "kagi zuki" is the hook punch in karate it is preformed with the lead or back hand lol sorry try again

  • @rokkvi1 theres a ton of techniques that are found in both karate and kickboxing, There are only so many ways to punch and kick after all therefore you will see cross over techniques often. because you see this cross over this is why so many people think this move or that move isnt karate because it looks like "kickboxing" and its rare for there to be a karate or tkd specific technique

  • @catkong7 I actually just watched a highlight video of Machida and it included him throwing a lead hook. That´s a boxing punch, not found in Karate, so you FAIL. watch?v=A5gYuCAgvV4

  • @catkong7 I doubt you even know what a straw man argument is but I´d be delighted to hear how any of my arguments is one. Look up "straw man argument" first though, to make sure you grasp the concept. There are plenty of techniques in karate and tkd that are also present in kickboxing/muay thai, so sure, you can say they are still doing karate. Also, the occasional karate/tkd specific technique will work in MMA. My point is, hardly any MMA fighter bases their striking on karate.

  • @rokkvi1 uh and kyokushin karate and other arts like san shou are not full contact and realistic? LOL Having actually pursued a fighting career before my health barred me from competing i can say that the coaches didnt discourage my karate as it was a full contact system. And yes if a knock down style of karate training is available i would encourage someone to take it. as the conditioning said styles produce is amazing and they have produced countless k-1 champs
