You can tell how heave your flow is by how long you can leave a tampon in before you need to change it. You just tell the doctor, I bleed through a super tampon in 4 hours, or whatever it may be.

It's better to use a pad so that you can monitor your flow. If you don't see the flow coming out it will be difficult to determine the flow. One of the very first thing a doctor asks a woman is when was her last menstrual and how is the flow. You can't know your flow type if you use tampons. And using a pad is not like sitting in your own blood. Try Always Infinity. That pad locks the flow right in. Also the use of tampons puts you at a higher risk for yeast infections.
