SelectPlusPeacekeepers Staying in DarfurPeacekeepers Staying in DarfurThe Associated PressThe U.N. Security Council has approved another year of peacekeeping in Sudan's Darfur region despite sharp divisions over genocide charges against the Sudanese president. The United States supports the mission but abstained from the vote. (August 1)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] SOT: The draft resolution has been adopted [Notes:track]U-N peacekeepers will stay in Sudan's Darfur region for another year. The U-S supports the measure -- but abstained from voting for the U-N Security Council measure.SOT: 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Alejandro Wolff, US Deputy Permanent Representative to UN: "The United States abstained in the vote, because language added to the resolution would send the wrong signal to Sudanese President Bashir and undermine efforts to bring him and others to justice. This council cannot ignore the terrible crimes that have occurred throughout the conflict in Darfur and the massive human suffering that the world has witnessed." This latest security council vote comes just weeks after Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir was charged with genocide in Darfur. But so far Bashir has not been taken into custody. He said any action to do so would be considered as an act of war. 4. SOUNDBITE (English) John Sawers, UK Ambassador to the UN: "No position has been taken by the Security Council on the question of whether to take any action in the light of the proposal of the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to indict President Bashir. That issue is to be addressed on another day. The Sudanese ambassador to the united nations says he is happy with the vote, adding that Sudan and African Union are committed to peace in Sudan and in the region. The United Nations estimates that up to 300-thousand people have died from fighting in Darfur -- nearly three million more have been displaced. A U-N peacekeeping force is trying to deploy in Darfur -- but right now only has 95 hundred soldiers and has been unable to improve the situation. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) ANCHOR VOICE:-------------------------VIDEO PRODUCER:------------------------------VIDEO SOURCE:--------------------------VIDEO APPROVAL:------------------------------VIDEO RESTRICTIONS:----------------------------------SCRIPT/WIRE SOURCE:------------------------------------

By the way also.. WHY the UN loacated in US while it (US) is an important pary in the most of the conflicts all over the world?
I think that make them not qualified for that role?

Maybe the Americans should also remember the genocide of 4 million Vietnamees, or 20 million native Americans, or the genocide of 3 million Algerians!

It's great that the peacekeepers are going to stay in Sudan but we need to have more peacekeepers in Sudan and President Bashir needs to be brought to justice as well as everybody else who is responsible for the genocide in Darfur.
