I've found a similar but more effective method than this. I'll share it some time when I feel like setting up the camera.
Only use this method with schellac based records. If you're looking to clean Edison Diamond Discs or acetates disks, this may not be the best method; in fact the use of water could damage your record.
This is the best method I've found to clean vintage schellac 78 RPM records. I've done my homework and found this to be the safest and most effective way to get the job done. That being said, I can't be held responsible if you end up damaging your disk.
As mentioned in the end of this video, replace the old dirty sleeves with new clean sleeves. I get my replacement sleeves here: http://www.bagsunlimited.com/cart/browse.asp?subcat=42
You get a glance of the sleeve at around 6:40. Especially if your record doesn't have a sleeve - I've found many 78's without one - It's worth the few bucks it costs to store them properly.
At the end of it all, if you don't know what you're doing, just put the record down until you do. When these classic recordings are gone, they're gone.
