I know most of the script of this film off by heart. Yes it was made to bolster British morale in the second world war. But it is full of wit, with engaging acting and fundamentally humane attitudes. If anything, the Nazis were much worse than Leslie Howard realised, but he did his best by this film to subvert what they stood for.
