The RNG determines the battles. Stopping, using items, throwing out items, opening the 'talk' window - all of these things change the RNG.
The tool-assist tells him when to do each of these in order to avoid a battle. It also tells him how long to wait before hitting the button during combat to score crits and for enemies to miss and to drop treasure chests. It's just 'wrong' that he threw out the dragon potion - hardest item in the game to get :P oh well.
