The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is a unique park in Kassel, Germany. Art historian Georg Dehio (1850--1932), inspirator of the modern discipline of historic preservation, described the park as "possibly the most grandiose combination of landscape and architecture that the Baroque dared anywhere" The area of the park is 2.4 square kilometres (590 acres), making it the largest European hillside park, and second largest park on a mountain slope in the world. Construction of the Bergpark, or "mountain park", began in 1696 and took about 150 years.

With its water gardens and its statue of Hercules, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe (hillside park Wilhelmshöhe) in the west of the Hessian city of Kassel is an outstanding masterpiece of the self-dramatization of absolutist rulers. A special sightseeing tip for Germany travelers. Its exceptional topographical setting on the slope of a hill in Habichtswald forest made it possible for generations of rulers and master builders to stage the seemingly impossible: water flowing down the hill in several different artistic forms without previously having been channeled up the slope using technical devices such as aqueducts or water raising machinery.

The octagonal building at the top of the mountain is crowned with an 8.3 meter copy of the Hercules Farnese. The constructional solution reached in its creation represents the very best in technical and artistic terms for this kind of monumental figure. The fact that it was to be positioned on top of a 40-meter pyramid meant the sculpture needed to be as light as possible.

  • Visit the documenta 13 in 2012!

  • @alexamerling20 You are welcome! :-)

  • Visit also the Sababurg and the large "Brother Grimm Forest" around this little castle and the Orangerie Palace, Loewenburg Castle and "Isle Siebenbergen" in Kassel. That are some of the "places", which inspired also the Brothers Grimm for their many fairy tales. There are some more fantastic and really magic nature places in the Kassel region, but they must still be secrets only for those, who love their spirit. :-) In the forests around Kassel, you can find and imagine the power. :-)

  • I live here and its a nice live;)

  • Heading here someday !!..nice video thanx !!

  • If I had a penny for every pixel of resolution this video has, i'd have a dime at most.

Kassel is great, though. No question about it.

  • Going there in August....

  • I've been to my husbands home town Kassel but never saw the Hercules lit up at night. We alway start at the bottom and walk up the stair to see who gets to the top first. I love it there and alway look forward to going back to Kassel for a visit. The people are great and it is so beatuiful every where you go. Last time we were there 2006 some one had done damage to the stautes under cascades. It broke my heart to see that. I hope they fix every thing before my next visit.

  • Kassel is located in the very nice North Hessian region and a perfectly acceptable area for anyone seeking a good quality of life in Germany.
