I think I remember a switch in the back of the NES that allows this. Most people just never saw it, that's why they didn't experience this kind of gameplay.
IMO, RBI was the best baseball game for the NES. Baseball Stars was a bit more sophisticated with the options, like naming your own players and keeping stats...but RBI wins in my book for straight playability. I logged countless hours on that game; with the occasional break to play some Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball...
