Street Psychic 101. 2009

This is one of the many public interactions filmed as part of Gerard McGlades demystifying of psychic phenomenon.




"I am interested in, often, banal, unreferenced aspects of everyday life such as our belief systems, how we perceive reality and the limitations we inadvertently set ourselves.

This has led me to investigate certain subjects, some seen as taboo, such as western ideas surrounding spiritualist beliefs and what is considered the occult most recently Clairvoyance, Divination and Telepathy.

Through adopting various techniques of cold reading, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship, in my work I play the role of The Artist as Shaman, as Charlatan.

The main premise of my work seem to be to validate issues as to help the viewer/participant gain greater understanding of an issue or situation of some sort. Though I am constantly pushing my own beliefs in a way to attempt to strengthen them I would wish the viewer to get a similar outcome from my work.

I work in mainly digital based media; Video, sound, and often performative/interaction based installation works as a means of transmitting these ideas.

after each public interaction i would come clean with the participant unveiling that all is a hoax and done through cold reading, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship.
