Here in Canada it works amazingly, but you're not forced into it, it's automatic. If you're a citizen, you're covered regardless of social status. In fact, the US is the only major 1st world country that has a for-profit capitalized health care system instead of a socialized public system and guess what? The US system is the most expensive. Sure, if you have the money you can get the best health care on Earth, but overall the US rates very poorly against other developed countries on health care.

The thing is that these are two separate questions. Isn't it relevant to discuss what should be classified as food, no matter if you have free healthcare or not? The reduced medical costs is mainly a consequence of the improved public health but its definitely not the main argument.
