In conjunction with Creative Time, Playing the Building is a project by David Byrne in which he turns a 9,000 sq. ft abandoned room in the Battery Maritime Building into an instrument. Through the use of an antique pump organ, controlled devices create sounds with only what is afforded by the building's infrastructure, including heating pipes, metal beams and pillars.

Challenging the project, curator Mark Beasley invited accomplished musicians to perform an improvisational piece with the building. The result is a captivating and unique musical experience.

  • More creative uses for music than we have ever experienced before.

Thank you David, for allowing us to interact inside your creativity.

As a fan of art, I would like to be in the audience today and perhaps in a year to experience the same setting again.

I bet it would bring out a different set of ideas and thoughts.

That is what art is meant to do. Inspire and stimulate creative thinking.
