Very beautiful. I hope this guy is not a Pakistani.

@yowanowich What images come to your mind ? Memories or imaginary stuff ... use your full brain potential not to try to figure out what the guy's playing (because, first we don't own sitars, how could we be judges ? 2) who gives a crap) but more on the music itself as a source of enjoyment , spiritual illumination ... for once , accept that you're just a "fan" and not "another artist listening to music from an artist's perspective oh , i'm a veryyyy important and serious person !" haha :)

@yowanowich This is not your average "bend" on guitar . They can play musical sentences in one bend , in combination of of 1/4 tones , each raga calls a different tuning of the sympathetic strings, as far as i know .
And , holy sh*t don't try to add "perspectives" on music perception . Who cares, seriously, if it's technical or not. The vast majority of "technical musicians" are complete non-musicians ... What matters is your whole perception of music .How does the music makes you feel?

I just looked for Indian music because I had to analyze it for school - now I'm really caught by Ustad Shahid Parvez. I've never seen something like this before. It is fascinating to watch him play the Sitar.

thats right man. I'm 15, been playing guitar for 4-5 years, and i have been playing sitar for just under 1 year now. And not to brag but im picking up crazy fast, but performing something like that is out of my league right now
-
@yowanowich From that perspective, so could David Gilmour
-
he take`s me out of this world
-
@BenniJonquil he's improvising. after many years one is able to "bend" or whatever pretty accurately but the real skill comes in being able to improvise in a pleasing, emotion, and technically difficult way

damn this sitar must be expensive o.O Is that gold at the place where he plays with his fingers?
I love music of the subcontinent, esp. alaaps in all different styles, but one thing about the sitar really confuses me...
How come the frets are movable? do the position of the frets depend on the rag? And why are the gaps between them not even, or atleast in proportional increments?

in some ragas certain notes are a bit sharper/flatter than they are in others..this is an advanced topic that many disagree about but that's the general idea
plus, you always have to move your frets a little bit to stay in tune after adjusting your bridge or putting on a different gauge string etc..
there are two 'missing' frets on the sitar, which is just because of tradition..i like to have all frets on my sitar but my teacher frowns upon it :p
