Pittsburgh, like many cities who've gone through tough economic periods, spends a lot of time talking about those who've moved on in search of greener pastures. Thousands of young people come to Pittsburgh every semester to take advantage of several world class universities and colleges. But when the diplomas are handed out the search for work takes many a young person on a journey out of the city limits, often accompanied by the "I wish I could stay, but..." statements that have formed something of a mantra for the last 30 years in the once steel capital of the world.
But lost somewhere in the gnashing of teeth and demands for our leaders to do something about all our talented young people moving to what start to sound like enemy territories - Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Chicago - is another story. The story of those who stayed. Not just to sit around and bellyache about losing the steel mills, but take advantage of the resources that are here and to create reasons to stay for themselves and for others. People who saw opportunities in the city's needs and believed that if they stayed they might contribute to not just making the city better, but proving that it's pretty fantastic as it is.
Ambulantic is proud to partner with Keystone Edge to bring you a series on those who stayed. Whatever Pittsburgh is in the coming years, it will be, to some extant, because of them.
