Kurushima is an island in Yaeyama where this dance originates. What makes this dance so special is the heishi which is sung by the dancers (for like half, or even more than half the verse-stamina is required). And we have to remember that these women are maybe my mom's age, and maybe one or two are older.
This was an awesome display of Okinawan Dance.
These five senseis of the Tamagusuku Ryu Shosetsu Kai came to perform as a tribute to their late friends, Kiyoshi Kinjo and Shoei Moriyama, on April 19, 2009 at Kaimuki High School Auditorium for Aki no Kai's recita entitled "Akatsichi". The five danced four dances pretty much back to back in this order:
*Higasa Odori
*Haru Nu Uchimami
*PARANKU (not them)
*Bashin Tui
*Kurushima Kuduchi
And you have to understand their unlimited talent. For those of you who do not understand the art of Okinawan Dance, you may not appreciate this, but I do have to tell you that their ability to change costumes along with their hair style (for those of you who do understand dance: they went from all five of them in karaji to three in katakashira, then the last two changed to katakashira), which all remained at the high quality work-their kimono was very neatly put on and their hari was exceptionally perfect.
These senseis amaze me everytime they come down for a performance, and I am very glad that this time I had my camera with me.
Cool.
